Denton Doula: Ashlyn Biedebach
We love our doulas and want to give every one of them a jump start into a successful doula business. Today we introduce Ashlyn Biedebach, one of our newest doulas. She lives and works as a doula in Denton, TX and is deeply involved there in the birthing community. Also trained as a registered nurse, she brings her own incredible experiences and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have her.
Welcome to Birth Boot Camp DOULA, Ashlyn. We know you will help countless people have their own amazing birth.
My name is Ashlyn Biedebach! I am a new “Dentonite,” and am loving living here with my husband! I am a registered nurse and have my bachelor’s in nursing from Texas A&M University. I work for a midwife in town as a birth assistant and absolutely love birth! When I am not at a birth (or sleeping after an all-night delivery), I love hanging out with our cat, reading a good book, or spending time with friends!
What first got you interested in doula work?
I have had a passion for the birth world for years. My eventual goal is to be a Nurse Midwife, a goal that blossomed after shadowing a midwife in early high school. I am working as a doula now to continue evolving my desire and passion.
Do you have any particular passions concerning birth, if so, why?
I absolutely love all types of birth and serving anyone who is having a baby. I would love to help serve younger women, even teenage mothers, who have a lot of questions or are fearful of the birth process! I wholeheartedly believe it is an honor to be invited to a woman’s birth process and I am thankful for all of the births I get to be involved in!
With so many doula trainings out there, why did you choose Birth Boot Camp DOULA training?
I had heard about Birth Boot Camp from my coworker, Rebekah Lewis, and after researching, felt the requirements and training fit best into my background as a nurse and my desire to practice in an evidence-based way.
Tell us about your training experience.
Training for me was the end of a growing process. I had a career change (full-time hospital nurse to on-call birth assistant) that allowed for a lot of downtime. In this time I was able to develop my own life mission statement and dream about my doula business to come. In training, I was able to further develop myself and believe in the knowledge and experience that I have gained. It was a great time!
How is doula work going for you? What is your favorite part about it?
Though I have not had doula clients yet, my favorite part of being at a birth is the initial moment when moms catch their baby and a family is made. I love watching first time parents overflow with emotions and have a hard time continuing my job through the tears! I also love the connections made after birth, when mom and baby are settled and comfortable. I can’t imagine doing anything else!
How did your training prepare you for actual birth attendance?
The doula training allowed me to be more comfortable with labor and birth- the sounds made, the sights seen, and what is normal. I was thankful for that.
How do you feel you are having a positive impact on your doula clients?
Though I haven’t had a specific doula client yet, after I leave a birth at the birth center I feel as though I have helped the parents navigate the big questions, and settle into their new roles as parents. They have a place to process, to cry and laugh, or simply just to be still. I enjoy creating space for them to do this.
To close, how do you believe doulas can make a positive difference in the birth experience for women?
A doula is a person who can radically change an environment for a birthing woman. Birth is a natural and beautiful process that is often hindered by fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of failure, or just fear of the next contraction. When a doula is present and a mother feels supported and safe, a woman is able to relax and allow her body to do the work it was always made to do.
