Doula in Denton, TX
Today we are excited to introduce you to one of our incredible Birth Boot Camp DOULAS, Rebekah, who is a doula in Denton, TX. We are so glad that Rebekah’s passion for doula work led her to Birth Boot Camp DOULA. If you need a doula in Denton, TX, call her!
Hi! I am Rebekah. I am married to my wonderful husband, John, and we have two beautiful daughters. We make our home in Denton, Texas and I love our fun, funky town!
I have always had a passion for pregnancy and birth.
Years before I was even considering starting a family I loved talking with women about their pregnancy and birth stories.
My first labor kicked off with two weeks of prodromal labor that had me ecstatic the night that active labor began! My daughter was born unmedicated in a hospital with a birth team consisting of midwives, a doula and my husband.
My second birth was out of hospital at a birth center with the same great support! I hope that my work as a doula can help to change the climate of birth from that of fear and a feeling of medical emergency back to one of awe and respect for the miracle of life and birth.
What first got you interested in doula work?
Like so many women, before being pregnant with my own child, I had never heard of a birth doula. I knew I wanted an unmedicated birth but knew I needed support from someone with experience and knowledge about how to help me succeed in my natural birth plan.
I ran across a description of a doula somewhere online (probably Donna Ryan’s Banned from Baby Showers blog – I read so many of her posts while pregnant!) and I knew I needed one!
As I did more research on a doula and the support role they provide to pregnant women I knew this was what I needed to do with my life, a way to fill the passion I had to support pregnant women in my community.
I started making plans then on how I could quit my job in finance to serve women in such a special time of their lives full time!
Do you have any particular passions concerning birth, if so, why?
I think it’s so important for parents to realize that doulas are for every kind of birth!
Yes, I support parents planning for an unmedicated birth but I also support parents who plan to have an epidural. Doulas can support your birth, no matter what that looks like!
I heard some couples chatting about their birth experiences at a party recently, one dad said he was so exhausted by the time his child was born that he just went to sleep instead of enjoying his son.
When asked about a doula he said he didn’t realize that was an option because they knew it would be a scheduled induction. In actuality, a doula would have been a great asset to their birth team since inductions can be quite the lengthy (and confusing!) process!
With so many doula trainings out there, why did you choose Birth Boot Camp DOULA training?
I am so happy with my decision to certify through Birth Boot Camp DOULA! I wanted a certification organization that works for their doulas and promotes running a sustainable business.
Birth Boot Camp offers so many professional resources and options to their doulas along with mentorship! I am also proud to be a part of an organization that has a positive influence in the birth community.
Some people say you can tell what a person is like by the way their friends act. This is true with Birth Boot Camp, our doulas are positive members of their birth communities. They are uplifting to other birth professionals and a great asset to any birth team! I just can’t say enough good things!
From a business perspective, I work as a birth doula and this is how I earn my living. It was a huge selling point that business training was included in the price of training and I didn’t have to add additional courses or figure it out on my own!
Tell us about your training experience and your favorite parts.
Training was awesome and I’d love to go back for another training weekend sometime because it was so much fun!
Over the weekend there was so much information we learned, from how to properly do comfort techniques and what to expect with hospital policies and procedures to how to effectively market your business.
At the end of training we had an opportunity to put all our new found skills into practice and it was such an ‘ah-ha’ moment, realizing that I knew what I needed to know to work as a doula and be an amazing asset to the families who have invited me into their birth space! I left training on fire with passion for my business and the families I serve!
How is doula work going for you? What is your favorite part about it?
Things are going great, both from a personal and business perspective! When we finished training I set some goals for myself and where I wanted my business to be in a year. It’s been about 11 months since training and I’ve met every single goal far quicker than I ever imagined I would!
My favorite part is a full circle moment for me. I remember being in labor with my first child, it was hard and I was near the end, what I call the “I don’t want to anymore” stage of labor. I would look across into my doula’s eyes and think to myself ‘if she did this, so can I’.
Now, when my clients are working hard and digging deep to find the strength they have within themselves to finish their marathon, I look into their eyes and assure them that they can do this, that they are doing this and that the reward will be great at the end!
The connection in that moment is really beyond words. Women supporting women as we have for centuries!
How did your training prepare you for actual birth attendance?
Throughout the certification work and during the actual training weekend there is just so much information that you’re learning and absorbing.
At training, you get an opportunity to take all that you have learned and put it into action. It was a really affirming moment for me.
Now that I’m a practicing doula things pop up that are “firsts” for me to see and situations to work with, each time, though it’s a “first” I have known what to do and have my training from Birth Boot Camp to rely on.
I’m not having to wade through these first experiences unprepared or uneducated.
On the occasion that I’m not certain what avenue to take next with a client I have a team of support ready and waiting with suggestions and amazing advice on what to do next! When you hire a Birth Boot Camp Doula, you get more than one doula, you get the resources of the entire company!
How do you feel you are having a positive impact with your doula clients?
After I work with a client I know (and they tell me!) that they felt supported and confident in their choices surrounding birth. So often any time you hear a birth story it is filled with fear and melancholy memories of experiences beyond their control.
Birth experiences matter more than our society acknowledges and sticks with a mother for the rest of her life. Unbiased support can change that.
Even when birth doesn’t go as planned, with support and resources a doula can provide, couples are happy with their birth experience.
To close, how do you believe doulas can make a positive difference in the birth experience for women?
Having a doula at birth allows partners to more fully support the laboring mother and takes the pressure off from knowing all the technical stuff. Birth is a season in most people’s lives, where as birth is my everyday life.
The bond that is fostered between mother and father after they’ve worked together to bring baby earthside is beautiful and helps to firm their foundation as they enter parenthood.
Doulas help to facilitate conversation between care providers and our clients. This can open up options that mothers may not know they had and be more confident in the choices they are making in their birthing journey.
